Free film screening and discussion event series #4: Documentary film "The Human Trial"
Published: November 7, 2022
We are happy to announce the fourth free film screening event which will be held on Monday, November 28, 2022.* To commemorate World Diabetes Day, a documentary film "The Human Trial", released in June 2022, will be screened followed by a discussion on the film in English. World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation in response to growing concerns about the health and economic threat posed by diabetes. It became an official UN day in 2006 and commemorated every year on November 14.
The Human Trial introduces audiences to a radical stem cell treatment for diabetes, a disease that, shockingly, kills more than five million people per year. Peeling back the headlines to show the sweat, passion, and sacrifice poured into every medical breakthrough, the film interweaves the stories of two patients—who have borne the physical and financial burdens of type 1 diabetes (T1D)—as they undergo the first year of a clinical trial led by San Diego-based biotech company ViaCyte—only the sixth-ever embryonic stem cell trial in the world. What follows is an intimate journey with the patients and scientists who epitomize the struggle of innovating cures.
The film offers audiences a concrete and nuanced portrait of what scientists and patients alike undergo as they put themselves on the line to be first and work together to test a possible cure for diabetes—and the critical importance of that collaboration.
Seats are limited to participate in person, so sign up early if you are interested! Online participants may watch the film online, and choose to join in a live discussion online on Monday, November 28, 2022, and/or join in an asynchronous discussion on an online discussion platform.
