A Curriculum That Develops Individuals Who Contribute to the Development and Implementation of Science and Technology

The study of mechanical engineering is essential for putting many different kinds of machines and equipment as well as fundamental technologies into practical use. By majoring in mechanical engineering, students can acquire advanced knowledge in this discipline and related fields. By carrying out their master's or doctoral thesis research, students learn to become scientists and engineers with a global perspective who are capable of contributing to the advancement and developing practical applications of cutting-edge science and technology, and through this, contribute to resolving social problems.

A Variety of Courses Stemming from
    Four Fundamental Branches

A Variety of Courses Stemming from Four Fundamental Branches

The graduate major programs offer a diversity of progressive courses that place emphasis on four fundamental branches of mechanical engineering — mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and dynamics of machinery -- as well as courses that extend to related fields. From the many courses offered, students take those that will help them accomplish their future goals. Through the courses, they also acquire advanced expert knowledge required to help solve social problems and to contribute to the advancement of this filed as scientists and engineers.

    A Laboratory Life That
    Develops Abilities through Interaction

A Laboratory Life That Develops Abilities through Interaction

Although students work independently on their own research when they join a research laboratory, emphasis is also placed on discussions and cooperation with one another. The laboratory environment makes it very easy for students to engage with teaching staff and interact with senior and junior students. In addition, by reporting their progress at their research laboratories and making presentations at academic conferences in Japan and overseas, students develop their ability to express their thinking and ideas to other people. This indispensable time spent engaging with people and exchanging ideas is sure to cultivate, at multiple levels, the necessary abilities to become successful engineers and scientists.

    Research Network

A World-Leading Faculty and Research Network

Around seventy faculty members with expertise in various fields including mechanics of materials, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, dynamics of machinery, control and robotics, and precision engineering conduct world-leading research at our department. Many projects are carried out in collaboration with research institutes and companies in Japan and overseas. We conduct creative research with a "monozukuri" spirt that is based on theories formed from systematic knowledge of the discipline. Through their master's and doctoral thesis research, students get to be part of cutting-edge studies and acquire the ability to carry out research and development with an international perspective.

    at the Frontier of Knowledge

Become Global Leaders in Industry and Academia and Reside at the Frontier of Knowledge

Students who have graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering have gone on to have successful careers and have become leaders in numerous fields. Many have found employment in the automotive, energy, electricity, and materials industries, and others have gone on to work at infrastructure-related companies such as power, gas, and railway. There are also those who are employed at communications companies and financial institutions. In addition, graduates from our Doctoral Program have joined universities, research institutes, and company laboratories in Japan and overseas as researchers. They are exercising international leadership at the frontier of knowledge by using the deep insight and creativity that were cultivated at our department.
