RSS

Under certain circumstances, a leave of absence may be granted to students who are unable to come to/return to Japan due to COVID-19. If you wish to request a leave of absence, read the details below and consult your academic supervisor or academic advisor as soon as possible. You will firstly need to undertake an online interview with your academic supervisor/advisor. Then prepare “Request for Leave of Absence” and “Reason for Leave of Absence (Disrupted Travel to Japan Due to COVID-19)” forms. Those forms must be submitted on your behalf by your academic supervisor/advisor to the Student Division so they arrive no later than June 30, 2020.

(On June 9, relevant information was sent to the following members: Department Chairs , Chairs of First-Year Studies, Heads of Academic Groups, Heads of Graduate Studies, and Chairs of Professional Master’s Degree Programs.)

1. Eligible students

Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctoral degree, or professional master’s degree students who meet either of the following, regardless of whether or not they are currently taking a leave of absence :

(1) International students who enrolled at Tokyo Tech in April 2020, are currently unable to come to Japan, and whose actual arrival is expected to be significantly delayed

(2) Students who are currently unable to return to Japan from studying abroad or from their home country, etc., and whose actual arrival in Japan is expected to be significantly delayed

2. Rules

・The leave of absence will be granted retroactively starting from April 1, 2020.

・A leave of absence due to the special measures can be granted for up to one year. This absence period will not be counted as part of the maximum absence period stipulated in Institute regulations concerning leave of absence.

・If students who meet the conditions stated in “1. Eligible students” have already been granted a different type of leave for the AY 2020 spring semester, they may request that it be switched to the leave of absence detailed herein (i.e., subject to the special measures). In this case, the start date of their leave of absence will become April 1, 2020.

3. Important points to note

The following students are not eligible:

・Those who attended lectures (including academic supervision) delivered via the remote lecturing system in the spring semester, and expect to earn relevant course credit(s). The course credit(s) will be cancelled if they are granted a leave of absence (starting from April 1, 2020) subject to the special measures.

・Those who are currently in Japan
