The 29th Robocon International Design Contest (IDC) will be held on Tokyo Tech's Ookayama Campus from August 6 to 18, 2018.* This year's contest theme — The World Star Hunting Swallow — is appropriately named after the Institute's mascot, which also appears in the Tokyo Tech seal.

IDC began in 1990 as a collaboration between professors of Tokyo Tech and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Now in its 29th year, the contest has grown exponentially, but remains true to its original style. It does not involve universities competing against one another, but instead gathers the best robotics students from around the world and allows them to form mixed teams. These teams then face a 10-day challenge, overcoming linguistic and cultural boundaries to design the latest robot creations.

This year's 55 participants include students from Tokyo Tech, MIT, Tokyo Denki University, Seoul University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Instituto Politecnico Nacional ESIMEZ, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, and several Thai universities.
