Visiting the Philippines, President Kazuya Masu made a courtesy call to De La Salle University (DLSU) President Br. Raymundo Suplido on September 13. During the meeting, the two presidents exchanged updates on education and research activities, and discussed cooperation between Tokyo Tech and DLSU.

The Tokyo Tech delegation to DLSU included Tokyo Tech Philippines Office Director Shin-ya Nishizaki, a professor at the Global Scientific Information and Computing Center, Professor Hirofumi Hinode and Lecturer Mariquit Eden Gan of the School of Environment and Society, Professor Nobuaki Otsuki of the Office of Education and International Cooperation, and International Affairs Department Director Noriko Suzuki.

Tokyo Tech and DLSU have actively promoted research and student exchanges for many years, including through a unique program between Tokyo Tech High School of Science and Technology and DLSU Integrated School. In addition, a number of Tokyo Tech alumni serve on the faculty of DLSU, including the Dean of the College of Education and more than 10 faculty members at the College of Engineering, a point remarked upon by the two presidents. Concluding the meeting, Masu and Suplindo confirmed their interest in deepening cooperation between DLSU and Tokyo Tech.

Later that day, Masu met briefly with College of Education Dean Raymund Sison.

During his trip, Masu also visited the Tokyo Tech Philippines Office — established on DLSU's Manila campus in 2005 — which leads the Institute's education, international cooperation, and outreach initiatives in the country. DLSU Professor Ronaldo Gallardo, advisor of the office, briefed Masu on the situation of higher education in the Philippines and provided an update on the office's activities.

On September 14, the Tokyo Tech delegation attended the 7th Seminar-Workshop on the Utilization of Waste Materials (WOW2019) at DLSU. Focused on Frontier Technologies in Sustainable Waste Utilization and Management, the workshop was hosted jointly by Tokyo Tech, De La Salle University, and the University of the Philippines. After Masu's opening remarks, Professor Kiyohiko Nakasaki and Associate Professor Fumitake Takahashi of the School of Environment and Society gave keynote speeches at the event.

Masu and his delegation also caught up with Tokyo Tech alumni in the Philippines. They attended a dinner organized by the Association of Tokyo Tech Alumni and Research Scholars (ATTARS) and enjoyed the opportunity to deepen engagement with alumni of the Institute.
