The East Japan Rookie Competition unites rowers in the East Japan area who are in their first or second year of competitive rowing. In the coxed four category, four rowers propel the boat with sweep oars, one oar per rower, while one cox steers the boat.

Competing against Tokyo Tech at the 45th East Japan Rookie Competition were rowers from Waseda University, Seikei University, and the University of Tsukuba. During the initial round, Team Tokyo Tech let their nerves get the better of them, allowing the University of Tsukuba rowers to finish first. However, Tokyo Tech adjusted their strategy and started the final more slowly. Towards the end of the race, both Tokyo Tech boats caught up and crossed the line with an impressive one-two finish.

Comments from crew leader Shuhei Hamada

It was our last chance to show the senior students, who are also our coaches, what we have been up to since we entered the Institute. I am glad that we were able to achieve good results. We have only just start in the Tokyo Tech Rowing Club, so we will work hard in daily practice and in our studies to grow both as rowers and as students of Tokyo Tech.
