Research about people in distant countries, or research about gorillas and chimpanzees? That's not terribly wrong, but there's more to it than that. For years, humanities scholar and social scientist including anthropologists have been employed by American technology companies such as Intel and Google. This shows that it is difficult to carry out long-term, global-oriented corporate activities based solely on technology and business perspectives. We have started company run by anthropologists and are supporting Japanese companies in the hope that they will also "acquire new perspectives". In this lecture, we at Meshwork will talk about the practical use of anthropology in industry.

Negotiation is pervasive in business, government, academia, law, and everyday life with family and friends. The problem is that it often fails—deals are not made, relationships are damaged, and money and time are wasted. Recognizing possibilities for mutual gain is a possible solution for a successful negotiation, and we need to learn a simple and systematic way to do it. This program will give you an opportunity to increase your self-awareness and diagnostic capability as a negotiator.

Basic Theory of Negotiation / Lecture

You can't script negotiation–other parties will have their own ideas about where to go and how to get there, circumstances may change and even your own preferences may shift. Therefore, you must improvise but think strategically and tactically. Negotiation theory will help you to organize your thoughts and ma a strategic decision.

In such case, parties often face impasse or split the difference situation and this type of negotiation is called "distributive negotiation" or "win-lose" style. You will learn the essence of this approach through a role play with other participant.

The 42nd Special Seminar of School of Engineering "Why do Robots need Neuromechanics?"

The ability to perform controlled movements is the fundamental basis for interaction with our environment. The high precision of this interaction results from a complex interplay within the central nervous system (CNS), muscles and sensory as well as environmental feedback and is referred to as Neuromechanics. Analysing physiological and pathological human movements, the Department of Rehabilitation & Prevention Engineering (RPE) continuously adds to neuromechanical knowledge and constantly extends its own expertise in this field. This neuromechanical expertise is increasingly being utilized when developing robot-assistive systems aimed for direct human-robot interaction.

The first part of the lecture will focus on Neuromechanics. Starting with how neonates perfect their motor skills so that they very quickly optimise their ability to interact with their environment, control strategies of the CNS to control muscular activation and movement will be highlighted. Besides introducing technical methods for recording and analysing these control strategies, pathological changes in neuromuscular control are also addressed. Using the example of neurorehabilitation, it will be shown, how the detection of pathological changes in neuromuscular control leads to self-adaptation of robotic rehabilitation devices and thus to a technically assisted rehabilitation therapy that is better adapted to patients' actual needs. Since sensory and environmental feedback has a direct impact on neuromuscular control, it can be assumed that physical human-robot interaction impacts CNS strategies used to execute movements. As this aspect is essential for the rehabilitation of impaired movement, Dr Sybele Williams will discuss it separately in the second part of the lecture. Particular emphasis will be placed on the influence of preceding familiarization to an end-effector robot-assisted system on neuromuscular facilitation. Finally, Maximilian Siebert will show, how assistive robotic systems can help to alleviate the nursing crisis. This segment of the lecture will underscore the importance of user involvement and a rigorous user-centered design, alongside biomechanical knowledge, in facilitating the systematic translation of robotics into clinical application.

The 43rd Special Seminar of School of Engineering

"Analytic center selection of optimization-based controllers for robot ecology"
Abstract:
During their young life, robots, with the invaluable help of humans, have made the planet Earth arguably worse from an ecological perspective. Robot ecology, far from simply concerning itself with the employment of robotic systems in ecological studies, focuses on the development of robots and algorithms to optimize the relationships of autonomous machines with living organisms and their physical environment. To this end, constraint-driven control, owing to its opportunistic nature, demonstrated to be the right paradigm for decision making of robots deployed over long time horizons in unknown and evolving environments.
Yet, the optimization-based nature of such controllers makes their analysis more difficult than their synthesis. In this talk, a novel approach for the analysis and synthesis of optimization-based controllers based on analytic center selection of differential inclusions is presented. Discussed applications will include long-term environmental monitoring and resilient control of multi-robot systems.

"Robust Locomotion For Legged Robots"
Abstract:
This talk will present recent research work of the locomotion control and planning on legged robots at Control for Robotics and Autonomy Lab (Coralab) at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. We first consider the locomotion control in the presence of system uncertainties and address the problem using robust optimization-based control with a customized solver. Then, we discuss the robust and safe planning for robots under the perception uncertainties and propose a trajectory optimization method incorporating the distributionally robust optimization idea.

Outline of the workshop

Communication skills are fundamental to the collaboration of diverse people. It is a process where people with different values and opinions understand each other and work together. However, improving communication skills is not easy. Nonviolent Communication is attracting attention as a practical technique. By learning these methods now, you will be more confident in your future research, friendships, and ways of doing things at work. This time, we will be hosting a two-day intensive workshop with two NVC specialists.

What is Nonviolent Communication (NVC)?
NVC is an approach to nonviolent living developed by Marshall Rosenberg beginning in the 1960s. NVC is based on the assumption that all human beings have capacity for compassion an empathy and that people only resort to violence or behavior harmful to others when they do not recognize more effective strategies for meeting needs. NVC theory supposes that all human behavior stems from attempts to meet universal human needs, and that these needs are never in conflict; rather, conflict arises when strategies for meeting needs clash. NVC proposes that people should identify shared needs, which are revealed by the thoughts and feelings surrounding these needs, and then they should collaborate to develop strategies and make requests of each other to meet each other's needs. The goal is interpersonal harmony and learning for future cooperation.

Outline of the workshop

Until now, many innovation creation and new business creation methodologies, including Design Thinking, Systems Thinking and Future Foresight, have focused on clarifying the "goal" as the principal step for such methodologies. Bus is this all? In reality, many cases are adopting the opposite of such approaches: instead of setting goals first, imaging new possibilities using existing means. In the VUCA era, where the future is uncertain and completely unpredictable, "Effectuation", a problem-solving approach that discovers new goals from the means at hand, has been attracting particular attention recently. At ToTAL/OPEN Programs, we would like to take advantages of this trend as soon as possible and offer it as a half-day workshop to expand your thinking methods. This workshop is especially recommended for those who have already experienced "Design Thinking" and/or "Future Insight".

In your life as a researcher, we tend to get distracted by questions of "how to solve", but in order to find more meaningful problems and new perspectives, it is extremely important to stop and think about "what problem to solve" and "why I want to solve it". In this workshop, you will rediscover your inner potential by inventorying your life, places, and experiences, sharing with your friends, and thinking about "what" and "why". A group of 3 to 4 people will share their preferences, aspirations, knowledge, and human resources that can be used through a "deep self-introduction" to answer "What do we want to achieve?" (i.e., inner potential) and "what are the resources at the hands of you and your team?".

Online course "Try Virtual Line Tracing: Introduction to Systems and Control Engineering"

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for "Try Virtual Line Tracing: Introduction to Systems and Control Engineering"! Any Tokyo Tech student, faculty, or staff member can take the course using MATLAB Online. Enjoy line tracing, the basis of automated driving, through MATLAB simulation experience and viewing virtual experiments. MATLAB TAs will assist you with any questions you may have.

Lane keeping is a basic technology for autonomous driving. What engineering techniques are needed to achieve this? Here, you will discover the fun and excitement of "sensing" and "feedback control" by challenging virtual experiments and simulations of line tracing (controlling a robot to move automatically along a drawn line) of a LEGO robot.

MATLAB Online used in this course is available free of charge to Tokyo Tech students, faculty, and staff. Please note, the course will be open only to Tokyo Tech students, faculty, and staff for free, but not to the public.

An edX Edge account is required to attend. If you do not have an account, please create it from the link below first.
