School of Life Science and Technology Unravel the Complex and Diverse Phenomena of Life

Training students of life science and technology to succeed on a global level. In the School of Life Science and Technology, students learn a wide range of specialized knowledge related to life science and technology and engage in world-class research and development. We aim to cultivate individuals with expertise in life science and engineering who can create new science and technology. In the Undergraduate Program, students learn the basics of science and technology in specialized courses covering life science-related biology, chemistry, and physics. In their fourth year, students make a start toward cutting-edge research as they engage in the Undergraduate Independent Research Project. The graduate school offers Graduate Majors in Life Science and Technology as well as Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering. In Life Science and Technology, students mainly take advanced courses in life science and conduct research. In Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering, students learn and conduct research by blending life science with the fields of chemistry, materials, machines, electrical and electronic engineering, information, etc. Students are encouraged to acquire internationally valued skills through study abroad at universities with cutting-edge knowledge and technologies in North America, Europe, and Asia or through internships at overseas companies.

Exploring Rogue Cells in Cancer Tissues

Department of Biotechnology, School of Bioscience and Biotechnology

In recent years, it has become apparent that cancer cells are not the only harmful constituents of cancer tissues. Rather, there are a variety of cells that aid the malignant transformation and growth of cancer. In my research, I use cancer cells to uncover the mechanisms of how cells release molecular messages and how these messages affect other cells. The process of setting up a hypothesis and designing an experiment to test the hypothesis is both challenging and rewarding. I hope to acquire the skills to be able to uncover the development and progression of cancer.

I'm in the School of Life Science and Technology, where in addition to life sciences we study organic chemistry, physical chemistry, information science, and numerous other fields to learn about life phenomena. The more knowledge in the life sciences I acquire, the more I understand aspects of other fields, and build a solid foundation of expansive knowledge.
For major subjects – the study of which becomes more comprehensive in the second year of the undergraduate program – detailed lectures are offered on genetics, photosynthesis science, developmental biology, and other life science fields as well. This helps us learn more in depth the disciplines of our interest.
Students at the Tokyo Institute of Technology can learn about leading technology from inspirational instructors who are at the forefront of research in their fields. What's more, while the Institute ranks as a leader in science and technology, it also offers an impressive selection of humanities courses. We can therefore take advantage of lectures, various symposiums held on campus, and other opportunities to learn about humanities in combination with the science courses of our chosen majors, and ultimately broaden our horizons. The opportunity to take thought-provoking humanities classes at a science and technology university noted for its highly specialized studies in major fields is yet another outstanding aspect of Tokyo Tech.

Susumu KAJIWARA

In order to pursue and realize a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable society (well-being) for all mankind in the 21st century, the field of life science and technology is becoming increasingly important, with its focus on humans and other living organisms. Moreover, as we have been facing numerous global social challenges and issues in recent years — such as the United Nations SDGs, global warming, and emerging infectious diseases — life science and technology has become an essential discipline in meeting said goals and solving large-scale problems. The School of Life Science and Technology is engaged in world-class research and development in more than 70 disciplines, and it fosters experts in the field. These experts will also acquire knowledge in a wide range of research fields relating to life science and technology, and will become global leaders and pioneers of novel research fields and creators of new businesses in the future.
