Digital Creators Club traP held the spring 2019 programming class for middle and high school students at Ookayama Campus on March 16, 2019.

The Tokyo Tech student-run workshop, aimed at youngsters with no prior programming experience, teaches the basics of code in a group work setting. Approximately 30 middle and high school students formed groups of four to create a simple game using JavaScript while receiving guidance from traP members. Employees of Supporterz Inc., a Tokyo-based recruitment and event planning company, were also present to offer support as in previous classes.

After some brief icebreaking activities and an introduction of the development environment, the participants jumped straight into writing their own code. Most groups made steady progress and completed their games before the end of the session, with some implementing additional elements not prescribed by the traP mentors.

Comments from programming class co-leader Yusuke Matsumoto 2nd year, Industrial Engineering and Economics

I am particularly interested in the optimization problem, and utilize various opportunities, including classes in the Industrial Engineering and Economics department, to study programming. I feel that many people think of programming as a difficult, hard-to-enter field that requires specialized knowledge. However, that is not the case. Anyone can start coding at any time.

At this class, we had participants create their own games using code. I hope we were able to familiarize the participants with programming and wipe out the image that programming is difficult.
