平成30年度9月学位記授与式 式辞

平成30年度9月学位記授与式式辞は英語で行われました。

The Tokyo Tech community is delighted to welcome all students, parents, family members, staff, and friends to the 2018 Fall Graduation Ceremony. I would like to congratulate sincerely all of our graduates today. Let us also express our respect to your families, who have given so much to support your academic progress.

On this special day, we celebrate the graduation of 34 students with bachelor's degrees, 183 students with master's degrees, 9 students with professional master's degrees, and 83 students with doctoral degrees. All of you have demonstrated unique capabilities as you open a new page in the 137-year history of the Institute.

More than half of you, 191 out of 309 graduates, are from overseas. You have overcome the additional challenge of studying abroad, pursued your passions, and applied your creativity to achieve your goals. From today, you can say proudly that you are graduates of Tokyo Tech, the finest science and technology university in the country, and one of only five designated national universities chosen to lead Japan into the future.

Some of you may have read "Tokyo Tech 2030," a statement formulated by our community to visualize the present and future of the Institute. Allow me to recite the first part of this statement to you today:

Out of reach,
beyond belief,
unimaginable,
unknown.

This is the world we envision
as we stand at the chasm of potential,
on the path to well-being
for all humankind.

We relish the thousand failures
that push us through the darkness
in search of that elusive solution.
The dream we share knows no boundaries.
We advance together.

Our unfearing minds resist the stereotype,
refute the pre-established,
and embrace the unconventional,
for we see
an alternate future.

This statement highlights the spirit of collaboration within our community, but it also represents the individual strengths acquired by each of you through your Tokyo Tech experience. It embodies the curiosity and diversity from which new knowledge is born. It encapsulates the integrity and high aspirations that will continue to propel you forward as graduates of Tokyo Tech. As you enter the next phase of your life, I urge you to continue embracing this spirit.

I have no doubt that all of you will make full use of the expertise and skills you have acquired here to create a better, alternate future. When facing adversity, draw courage and motivation from the fact that you are lifelong members of the Tokyo Tech community. Our alumni associations around the world ensure that wherever your path leads, you always have access to your former classmates and other Tokyo Tech friends. Reach out to these associations and engage with them. You never know, you might even run into me at one of their gatherings.

Finally, I want to draw your attention to Tokyo Tech's seal, the swallow by the window (which you can see on the wall behind me). This seal symbolizes the Institute as a hub of technical innovation from which the windows of the world open up to its members. You are now standing at this window, ready to take flight. I encourage all of you, as Tokyo Tech graduates, to boldly explore and enjoy the diverse world waiting for you.

Thank you very much, and again, congratulations.
