Tokyo Institute of Technology Research Data Policy

Tokyo Institute of Technology ("the Institute") seeks to contribute to global sustainability of the world and the support of human life and aims at developing future global leaders of integrity – such as researchers and educators in science and technology, as well as engineers and management-level executives in the industry – through education and research activities of excellent standards.

To achieve this mission and eventually bring about prosperity not only at the Institute but also to future society at large, various outcomes from our honest research processes must be appropriately preserved and managed as valuable resources for the future, and widely utilized and shared throughout the world. Thus, based on the above philosophies, we have established our basic policies regarding preservation, management, and utilization of research data of the Institute.

1. Definition of research data

"Research data" managed under this policy is defined as information that is either acquired or created through research activities of the Institute, in any format – digital or otherwise.

2. Responsibilities of those involved in research activities

2-1. Preservation and management of research data

Research data must be appropriately preserved and managed in accordance with relevant laws, regulations, rules, etc. in and outside of the Institute.

2-2. Utilization of research data

The utilization of preserved and managed research data is to be promoted and encouraged, unless restricted by laws, regulations, rules, etc. in and outside of the Institute.

2-3. Methods

How research data are preserved, managed, and utilized is determined by the individual, as long as the data are interoperable, machine readable, etc.

3. Responsibilities of the Institute

The Institute is responsible for promoting the development of an environment suitable for preservation, management, and utilization of the research data.
