    Scholarship Benefits and Overview

ADB provides scholarships for Master's Program students for one year with an extension to the second year of study, as appropriate, which shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by Tokyo Tech. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years. It is strongly recommended to check the eligibility conditions of this scholarship.

The scholarship provides a monthly allowance of JPY 147,000 per month, a book allowance of JPY 100,000 per year, a thesis allowance of JPY 50,000 per year, travel expenses, medical insurance and others. ADB-JSP scholarship recipients are not required to pay admission and tuition fees. Scholarship items and amounts are subject to change without notice.

Please read this website carefully. Applicants must send the required documents to the Admission Division during the designated application period.

Documents sent to the ADB-JSP coordinator or to the inquiry e-mail indicated at the end of this document WILL NOT be reviewed.

<Caution> Applicants from "ADB graduated member" countries, i.e., Hong Kong, China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taipei,China are no longer eligible for ADB-JSP. Please check the ADB's website.

The five steps of the application process for the master’s program at Tokyo Tech under the ADB–JSP:

      • Step 1. Eligibility
    • Please check your eligibility for the scholarship on the ADB website. This is naturally a very important step! For example, only a national of an ADB borrowing member country is eligible for the scholarship. Another important condition is that a candidate needs to have “at least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application.”
    • Step 2. Academic Supervisor

To be considered for admittance to Tokyo Tech as well as for the ADB–JSP, applicants for the ADB–JSP must first find an academic supervisor. Applicants are required to communicate directly with their intended academic supervisor at Tokyo Tech to obtain the consent of the desired faculty member to serve in this capacity. Applicants need to directly contact the intended academic supervisor via email, providing a self-introductory statement and a letter of intent for the period of study at Tokyo Tech. Applications will not be accepted without the consent of a Tokyo Tech faculty member.

For further information on our faculty members, such as email addresses and contact information, please refer to the Tokyo Tech Star Search (Researchers’ Database) . Some academic supervisors may require the submission of additional documents before the stated application deadline.

    • Step 3-1. Application documents for IGP(C) and ADB-JSP

If you are eligible for the scholarship and obtain the consent of an academic supervisor, then you can apply for the International Graduate Program (C).

<Important> Original documents written in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Translations should be certified by a public institution. Submission of income certificates is required of those applicants with a family member who is a working person and those applicants who are working at the time of application.

    • Step 3-2. The originals of ADB-JSP Application documents

Only successful applicants will be asked to submit the original documents of the income certificates for your family member and yourself, immediately after the announcement of the selection results. Therefore, you are asked to keep the income certificate(s) until you receive the ADB-JSP selection result.

When an applicant arranges the necessary documents (i.e., Employment and Income certificates), please make sure that the following points are well included and reflected.

A Certificate of Employment should be issued by a company or an organization according to the following guidelines :

    (1) Include the company or organization’s letterhead/logo and the name and title of the authorized signatory.

    (2) Include the starting and ending dates of the period of employment (e.g., “January 2016 to December 2017”, “January 2016 to present”). If the present employment period is shorter than 2 years, the applicant must also submit a certificate of employment from their previous company or organization.

    (3) If the current status of the applicant’s family member is unemployed, retired or deceased, an authenticated supporting document must be submitted (e.g., issued by the local government).

Income Certificate of an applicant or the family member should be issued in terms of monthly basis or annual basis. Please note that computer-generated proof of income without authorized signatory is not acceptable.

If the income amount is expressed in local currency, fill-out and submit the income conversion form, which is designated by ADB.

If the applicant is single, their parents’ annual or monthly income must be certified and submitted in addition to the applicant’s own certificate.

If the applicant is married, the spouse’s annual or monthly income must be certified and submitted in addition to the applicant’s own certificate.

    • Step 4. Selection Process

The Tokyo Tech admission decision will be made based on the application, academic transcripts, related documents, and screening and interview processes (including an Internet-based interview). Notification of admission results will be sent to all applicants in mid-July.

(Important note: Tokyo Tech no longer accept scholarship awardees for April intake.)

    • Step 5. Notificaiton of the Scholarship

The selection result of the scholarship needs to be approved by the ADB, after notification of the admission result. Thus, notification of the scholarship award could be delayed. Regardless of the department you choose, the most important aspect is whether your proposed research field and goals are consistent with the mission and goals of the ADB–JSP program (i.e., the contribution to “development”).
