Graduate Major
Curriculum

Broader, deeper — a curriculum that supports those aiming to become globally successful researchers

In the Earth-Life Science graduate major, related courses are organized into categories to provide systematic, specialized learning according to students' level of learning and attainment.

    • Tokyo Tech
    • Other Universities,
      Technical Colleges, etc.
  1. Entrance
    Examination

Applicants must pass an entrance examination to advance from an undergraduate major to a master's program.
  2. Master's Program
    ( 2 Years )*1

    400-Level and 500-Level Courses

In addition to specialized skills in the fields of earth and planetary science, biology, and chemistry, the program offers specialized courses with the aim of cultivating 1) the ability to integrate the understanding of different spatial and temporal scales, 2) the ability to tackle global issues facing humankind and complex problems such as the origin of life including extraterrestrial life, and 3) the communication skills necessary to demonstrate international leadership. In order to achieve this, we have established specialized subjects and research subjects.
Specifically, by offering three specialized courses in chemistry, biology, and earth and planetary science, students will develop a broad perspective on everything from molecules and life to the earth and planets, and will enhance their expertise by conducting their own research in research courses and master's thesis research. The program also offers common courses taught by foreign faculty members and corporate lecturers, and is designed to cultivate the basic language skills, presentation and debate skills, and the ability to identify and solve problems independently that are necessary for conducting independent research on an international scale.

    • Research Seminars
Through the lectures conducted in each laboratory, students acquire the latest specialized knowledge in their major research field. In addition, through master's thesis research, each student will clarify the objectives and methods of the research to be conducted and acquire the ability to organize and report the experimental results obtained.
    • Research-Related Courses
Students use the knowledge they have acquired in specialized courses to formulate, plan, and carry out their master's thesis research according to their research theme. In addition, students will periodically present their research results and discuss them with faculty members and fellow students through laboratory rotations.
    • Graduate Major Required Courses
Through the three compulsory specialized courses in chemistry, biology, and earth and planetary science, students will acquire the specialized academic skills necessary for a cross-sectional understanding of the earth and planets from molecules and life.
    • Graduate Major Courses
Students acquire a high level of expertise by taking elective courses.
    • Global Career Development Courses
Through group exercises in projects related to earth science, environment, space, and life science, students learn how to set and solve problems. Students will also acquire presentation and debate skills in English, which are necessary for conducting independent research on an international scale.
