Traditionally, engineering research and development that touches areas such as human health, medicine, and the environment had been conducted separately. In the Graduate Major in Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering, we blended and brought the science and technology in these areas together under one roof and gave it a name — Life Engineering. We offer integrated education and carry out cutting-edge research that deepens understanding of people and society. Through this, science and technology that enrich our lives are developed.

Life engineering is a science and technology that involves a wide range of engineering such as life science, mechanical, and electrical. Therefore, using the specialized knowledge they have acquired up to now as a foundation, students gain cross-disciplinary specialized knowledge such as those in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information science, materials, chemistry, and life science. Along with these, students learn about areas such as human science, medical and health sciences, bioethics, and human environment. By blending all this knowledge together, a new society based on life engineering can be built.
3
In the Graduate Major in Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering, there are students and faculty members with various expertise. Such an environment enables students to acquire a wide range of knowledge and gain new perspectives by integrating the knowledge they possess with those they amass from interacting with students from other fields as well as with those they obtain from the broad range of fields they study. Through this, we cultivate individuals who not only have a firm understanding of their areas of expertise, but also have a wide perspective, ability to think about things in depth, have advanced and innovative technical development abilities, and advanced problem-solving abilities.
4
In the Graduate Major in Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering, we foster individuals with basic abilities to succeed in society. Our unique programs allow students to acquire various planning, leadership, and communication skills necessary in life engineering. Furthermore, by developing their sense of internationality, we cultivate individuals who will play a leading role in the international community.

Life engineering is a science and technology where collaboration with external organizations is very important. Based on the Tokyo Tech tradition of valuing "monozukuri," the Japanese art of craftsmanship and manufacturing, faculty members in this program have established close ties with companies and medical institutions both at home and abroad, and actively collaborate with them. Through these partnerships, our students are exposed to cutting-edge technologies that are otherwise difficult to experience, enabling us to cultivate individuals with a broad perspective.
