Peripatos Open Gallery 2013

Peripatos Open Gallery

The Peripatos Open Gallery was inaugurated in March 2013 at Suzukakedai Campus.

The Peripatos Open Gallery has two exhibition areas: an indoor display area for paintings and an outdoor area for sculptures. The latter area with its three-dimensional works of art was intentionally designed to catch the attention of students, staff and visitors as they stroll through the Suzukakedai Campus grounds encouraging both relaxation and inducing them to return to see future exhibitions.

Peripatos Open Gallery

The creators of the works of art are students and graduates of Joshibi University of Art and Design. Tokyo Tech's Interdisciplinary School of Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Art of Design, Joshibi University of Art and Design, concluded a cooperative agreement to enhance their educational and research activities. Through this agreement, both universities are able to extend their academic reach beyond their respective bounds of the sciences and humanities. The exhibits showcase the depth of artistic sensitivity of these young artists.

The name for the gallery comes from the campus improvement plan, Peripatos no Kento 21, which aims to establish the Suzukakedai Campus as a world-class research mecca nestled in its rich natural setting. Peripatos, referencing the colonnades or peripatoi in the Lyceum where Aristotle and his students met, became the name of Aristotle's school and his followers were known as peripatetics. Peripatetic also refers to wandering or walking about and it is alleged that Aristotle lectured while walking. Aristotle's school is often referred to as the Peripatetic school.

Similar to the aim of the Peripatos Open Gallery, the Suzukakedai Library maintains the Peripatos Collection, which lends recent novels and travel guides among other non-science resources, as a means of providing materials for relaxation. The Peripatos Cinema screenings held on campus, which are open to students, staff and local residents, also seek to fulfill the Peripatos no Kento 21 plan by providing another channel for relaxation.
