Peripatos Open Gallery 2015

The Peripatos Open Gallery, inaugurated in March 2013 at the Suzukakedai Campus, has two exhibition areas: an indoor area for paintings and an outdoor area for sculptures.

All works are creations by students and graduates of Joshibi University of Art and Design, which has a cooperation agreement with Tokyo Tech's Interdisciplinary School of Science and Engineering. Through this agreement, both universities are able to extend their academic reach beyond their respective bounds of humanities and sciences.

Paintings displayed in the J2 and J3 Buildings and Suzukakedai Library have now been replaced with this year's new creations, which will be exhibited until April 30, 2016.

The Peripatos Open Gallery offers relaxation and peace of mind, inducing students, staff, and visitors to return to see future exhibitions.

Ms. Tanaka's comments

Since childhood, whenever I looked at buildings or heard the news, I could feel the existence of obscure, overwhelming concepts like society or life and death. I don't have any particular reason why I paint, but when I paint buildings or occurrences I am drawn to, I feel a little more connected to these things I thought had nothing to do with me. With the help of that slight sense of connection, I perhaps try to capture the existence of those bigger, more obscure concepts.

Spring has gone, the trees are greening up. In the garden filled with dazzling light, the flowers and trees talk to the garden owner. "So glad you are here."

Through my work, I hope viewers can imagine the feeling of touching a ground cherry or hearing the sounds at a ground cherry fair.

Ms. Sugawara's comment

I painted a common, familiar landscape. I hope I can put in the spotlight a scene many of us consider merely ordinary.
