Joint Graduate Program with Tsinghua University

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and Tsinghua University, a leading university in China in the field of science and technology, offer this program to promote research activities under the guidance of advising professors from both universities so that students can obtain their master's degree.

Outline

This joint program was started in 2004, with the aim of fostering outstanding human resources in science and technology with the ability to be international leaders. It is Japan's first double-degree program at post-graduate level whereby students work to attain two degrees, one from Japan and one from overseas. There are three courses under the program - Nanotechnology, Bioscience and Biotechnology, and Decision Science and Technology - made up of students participating from Tokyo Tech and Tsinghua University.

The curriculum is mainly in Japanese and Chinese, with Chinese lessons given to students participating from Tokyo Tech before they head to Tsinghua University to study.

The program for students from Tokyo Tech takes 2.5 years to complete. These students enter the master's course at Tokyo Tech in April and then enter Tsinghua University in September of the same year. The students are actually in China for one year from the middle of August until July the following year, and so are enrolled at both universities for around two years after entering Tsinghua University in September of the first year. During that time, they receive guidance from advising professors from both universities and aim to obtain master's degrees from each institution.

There have been over 130 participants from Japan and China to date. Some 90 students have completed the program and are currently active in various fields worldwide, making use of the cutting-edge knowledge, language skills, cultural awareness and human networks gained in Japan and China.
