AEARU

The Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) was founded in January 1996 at the suggestion of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Established as a forum for discussion among the presidents of leading research-oriented universities in East Asia with the goal of promoting exchange and cooperation activities between the major universities in the region, AEARU contributes not only to the development of higher education and research but also to cultural, economic and social progress in the East Asian region.

The presidents of 19 leading universities in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan comprise the AEARU membership. The association's activities include an Annual General Meeting, as well as workshops, student summer camps and competitions, and international symposia held throughout the year to promote mutual exchanges of ideas and information and to develop close bonds between the member universities.

Tokyo Tech joined AEARU at the association's second General Meeting, held in September 1996. The Institute hosted AEARU's 3rd Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Workshop in 1999, a summer camp for master's students from AEARU universities in 2012, and the 6th Energy and Environmental Workshop in 2016.

At the 2015 Annual General Meeting, Tokyo Tech was elected to serve as a member of AEARU's Board of Directors in 2016 and 2017.
