- Applicants must pass an entrance examination to advance from an undergraduate major to a master's program.
-
Master's Program
(2 Years)*1
- 400-Level and 500-Level Courses
-
Using their undergraduate training as a foundation, students deepen their expertise and acquire knowledge on cutting-edge topics through Major Courses in communications, networks, and security; signal processing; integrated circuits and computers; intelligent information processing; media information processing; biological information processing; and sensory information processing. Also, by conducting research through Research Seminars and master's thesis research, students are able to strengthen and build on their expertise and develop their creativity.
-
- Communications, Networks, and Security
- Through courses in each of the following fields, students gain an understanding of the whole context, study the component technologies, and learn about research and development trends: information theory and basic techniques pertaining to common information sources and communication channels, methods of designing practical error-correcting code using probabilistic inference, definition and proof of the security used in present-day encryption technology, advanced communication network control technology, and mobile communications technology.
-
- Signal Processing
- These courses cover the following, together with the relevant mathematical principles: processing and compression of multidimensional information such as still, moving, and 3D images; various signal processing technologies used in digital wireless communications; and useful algorithms in signal processing.
-
- Integrated Circuits and Computers
- These courses cover (1) circuit technology unique to analog integrated circuits, (2) problems and solutions in design automation based on understanding of design abstraction levels for digital integrated circuits and computers, (3) fundamental methods for laying out digital integrated circuits, and (4) fundamental methods for addressing unsolved layout problems.
-
- Intelligent Information Processing
- These courses cover replication of information processing functions of the human brain using computers, as well as information infrastructure technology.
-
- Media Information Processing
- These courses cover information technology related to communication, such as media information processing technology and user interfaces.
-
- Biological Information Processing
- These courses cover the measuring of biological signals, medical information processing, and methods for analyzing sensitivity data.
-
- Sensory Information Processing
- These courses cover the human senses, characteristics of sense perception and measurement methods, and the mechanisms of cognition.
-
- Research Seminars
- Research Seminars held by each laboratory provide exposure to the latest developments in the field through literature reviews and presentations on reference materials. Comprehension of the topics is also intensified through discussion.

The curriculum is structured to enable students to acquire abilities as (1) highly educated researchers and engineers with world-class capabilities and as (2) leaders pioneering the frontiers of science and technology for the realization of a thriving international society. To this end, students pursue study in their chosen area of specialty through doctoral thesis research and Research Seminars, building on the knowledge they acquired in the Master's Program. They also take related Major Courses, Humanities and Social Science Courses, and Career Development Courses.
-
- Specialized Course
- This course covers quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography, and quantum algorithms, providing an understanding of the application of quantum mechanics to communications.
-
- Research Seminars
- Research Seminars held by each laboratory provide exposure to the latest findings and advanced topics through literature reviews and presentations on reference materials. Comprehension is also intensified through development of novel technologies based on the shared information.
-
- Research Management Courses
- Research Management Courses cover research management skills required of an independent researcher to lead technology development, including research progress management and presentations skills.
