1.General Prospectus

Tokyo Institute of Technology (“Tokyo Tech”) and RIKEN, a leading advanced research institute in Japan (, launched the Tokyo Institute of Technology-RIKEN International School in April 2008.

The main purpose of this program is to offer international students an opportunity to enroll in a Doctoral program at Tokyo Tech as well as a chance to carry out research at Tokyo Tech and RIKEN. Tokyo Tech only offers the September admission option for this program.
The academic supervisors will be both Tokyo Tech and RIKEN professors who specialize in the field of research of the participating students.

There is no Japanese language requirement for this program as lectures and seminars are held in English. However, students are given opportunities to attend Japanese language classes on a regular basis in order to better adapt to daily life in Japan.


Tokyo Institute of Technology-RIKEN International School, one of the International Graduate Programs, offers a course of study in Nano-material and Nano-biomaterials.
This recruitment prospectus is effective for the Doctoral Program scheduled to begin in September 2019.

Students enrolled in the Doctoral Program are expected to successfully complete their supervised study within three years. To attain a doctoral degree, students need to earn the designated number of credits outlined by their department in a predetermined program of study; complete and receive approval of their research theses; and pass a comprehensive final examination. Students who demonstrate outstanding academic and research performance during the program may be able to reduce their period of study.


Non-Japanese applicants not residing in Japan who satisfy one of the conditions provided below. Please note that applicants may NOT (i) apply to a different Tokyo Tech program before receiving admission results or (ii) submit multiple applications to different master’s programs for the same enrollment period. Applications in either of the above two cases will be rejected or revoked.

(1) Persons who have successfully obtained a degree equivalent to a master's degree or a professional master's degree at a university or college outside Japan or who are expected to do so by September 24, 2019

(2) Persons who have obtained a master's degree or a professional maser's degree in Japan
(3) Persons who do not meet eligibility conditions (1) or (2) but are individually assessed and recognized by the relevant School at Tokyo Tech as having academic abilities equivalent to or higher than that of a master's degree or professional master's degree holder and are at least 24 years old by September 24, 2019

Persons who expect to satisfy the first condition stated above between September 25 and 30, 2019 are requested to contact the Admissions Division before starting the application process.

The Application for Individual Assessment of Admission Eligibility and supplemental documents are required for applicants who apply under the eligibility condition (3). Applicants will be informed of the results of their individual assessment of admission eligibility in the middle of June 2019.

The admission of applicants expecting to graduate from a university or college will be revoked should the applicant fail to graduate or obtain a master's or professional master's degree by September 24, 2019.

4.Application Procedures

Prior to submitting the application materials to the Admissions Division, applicants are required to go through the following steps.

(1)Directly email intended academic supervisors* at Tokyo Tech or RIKEN, and provide a self-introduction and letter of intent for your period of study at Tokyo Tech to obtain their consent.

(2)After obtaining consent from the intended academic supervisor, submit the Contact Form via email to the appropriate contact person at titech.riken (at) (replace “(at)” with “@”) no later than March 15, 2019.

(3) You will then be informed of the preliminary screening results by March 31, 2019, after which you must submit your formal application to the Admissions Division. If you do not receive your result by April 4, 2019, please be sure to email the contact person to let them know.

(4) If you are interested in studying under individuals not on the List of Academic Supervisors, please write their names in the Contact Form. However, please understand that it might not be possible to fulfill your request. Please also note that, at Tokyo Tech, only faculty members affiliated with the School of Materials and Chemical Technology can serve as academic supervisors for this program, whereas at RIKEN, all researchers can serve as academic supervisors.

As additional documents may be required before the stated deadline, check the web page periodically and send any inquiries you may have regarding course requirements to the abovementioned contact person.

Summary of Thesis (free format)

A summary of your thesis or, if the applicant has not written a master’s thesis, a summary of the master’s program research.

English Proficiency Test Score Report (original, no photocopies)

・Applicants are required to submit English proficiency test score reports from TOEFL-iBT, TOEFL-PBT, The revised TOEFL-Paper delivered Test, TOEIC, or the IELTS Academic Module taken on or after April 24, 2017.

・Score reports from the Institutional Testing Program of TOEFL and TOEIC (TOEFL-ITP, TOEIC-ITP, TOEIC-IP), TOEIC S&W or other proficiency tests not specifically listed above will not be accepted.

・Submission method:

TOEFL: Submit the original Examinee Score Report sent from ETS, or have ETS send the Official Score Report directly to Tokyo Tech.

TOEIC: Submit the original score sheets sent from ETS, or have ETS send the original score sheets directly to Tokyo Tech.

IELTS: Submit the original score sheets sent from the British Council, or have the British Council send the original score sheets directly to Tokyo Tech.

・Applicants can request ETS or the British Council to send an official score report directly to Tokyo Tech, ensuring that it reaches the Admissions Division by April 23, 2019. Tokyo Tech's institutional code number for TOEFL is "0215." Your score report should be sent to the Admissions Division, regardless of the department to which you are applying.

・It is possible that native English speakers or students who have been awarded an undergraduate and/or graduate degree* from an institution where all instruction was in English may not be required to submit English proficiency test scores. Such applicants should consult their intended academic supervisor prior to submission of the application form to verify that they are exempt from this application requirement. Whether or not an applicant needs to provide an English proficiency test score report will be determined by the academic supervisor’s department and the requirement is not automatically waived. If the exemption is approved, the chair of the department will send him/her a notice by email. Applicable candidates are required to submit a copy of this email with other application documents.

*Undergraduate and graduate degrees should be equivalent to the Japanese educational definitions of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees.

The application fee is non-refundable. However, in certain cases (see 1. and 2. below), the application fee may be refunded. In these cases, bank remittance or transaction handling fees should be borne by the applicant.

1) Tokyo Tech will not accept or consider any documents received after the stated deadline or any incomplete applications.

2) The applicant is responsible for the tracking and receipt of all materials. Tokyo Tech strongly encourages sending the documents by registered mail, courier, or a similar service that provides tracking numbers and receipt verification services.

3) Submitted documents will not be returned under any circumstances. Tokyo Tech will not provide photocopies of the submitted documents. Please keep a copy of all documents for personal reference. Should a document not be reissuable, please submit a certified copy instead.

4) Admission may be withdrawn at any time, even after enrollment, if the application documents are found to be invalid or contain false information.

5. Admission Decision

The admission decision will be made based on the application, academic transcripts, related documents, and screening and interview processes including an Internet-based interview. Notification of admission results will be sent to all applicants in Late June 2019.

6. Admission and Tuition Fees

Those admitted into the Tokyo Institute of Technology-RIKEN International School will be required to pay the following fees.

7. International Program Associate

Students of this program will be admitted as International Program Associates of RIKEN and will be subject to the review and approval of both Tokyo Tech and RIKEN. Students will receive daily living expenses of ¥5,200 (JPY) and, in addition, is allowed free use of RIKEN housing or provided a housing allowance of up to ¥70,000 (JPY) per month. Both allowances will be provided for up to three years.
