Urgent Financial Support for Tokyo Tech Students

The extension of the state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus may cause concern for students with financial problems.

In particular, those whose income has decreased as a consequence of economic stagnation may struggle with tuition payments, living expenses, etc.

Tokyo Tech has decided to provide special financial support "COVID-19 Student Emergency Loans" as an urgent response to help such students continue their education at the Institute.

Eligible students

Emergency Loan Type I

Note: The Institute is currently planning Emergency Loan Type II, for which all students may apply. (June.11: The information about Type II was updated)

1. Bachelor’s degree students who meet all of the following are eligible for Emergency Loan Type I:

  • Those who have applied for the "financial support system for higher education (⾼等教育の修学⽀援制度)," "Special Measures for Tuition Exemption," or "Scholarship for Outstanding International Undergraduates" for AY 2020
  • Those who are living in Japan
    International students who are already in Japan will be eligible
  • Those who have a Japanese bank account into which loan disbursements will be deposited
  • Those who are experiencing financial hardship due to decrease in income, etc. caused by the effects of COVID-19, and need urgent financial assistance

2. Master’s degree, doctoral degree, and professional master’s degree students who meet all of the following are eligible:

  • Those who have applied for exemption from tuition and or enrollment fees
  • Those who are living in Japan
    International students who are already in Japan will be eligible
  • Those who have a Japanese bank account into which loan disbursements will be deposited
  • Those who are experiencing financial hardship due to decrease in income, etc. caused by the effects of COVID-19, and need urgent financial assistance

Emergency Loan Type II

  Tokyo Tech is strengthening its student support by expanding loan eligibility to all students who are in need of financial support.

Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctoral degree, and professional master’s degree students who meet all of the following are eligible for Emergency Loan Type II:

  • Those who are experiencing financial hardship due to decrease in income, etc. caused by the effects of COVID-19, and need urgent financial assistance
  • Those who are living in Japan
    International students who are already in Japan will be eligible
  • Those who have a Japanese bank account into which loan disbursements will be deposited
Note: Those who have applied for Emergency Loan Type I may not apply for Emergency Loan Type II.

Scholarship amount

The Emergency Loan amount is fixed at JPY 50,000 per month.

The maximum loan period will be six months (i.e., the maximum loan amount is JPY 300,000).

Read the Guidelines and Application Instructions (below) carefully, and apply to Student Emergency Support Office.

Application documents must be sent by postal mail and received by the Student Emergency Support Office no later than June 26, 2020.

Emergency Loan Type II

Application documents must be sent by postal mail and received by the Student Emergency Support Office no later than July 31, 2020.
