IASTE is an international non-political organization providing international internship programs to students majoring in science, engineering, agriculture, and pharmaceutical science. Tokyo Tech and twenty other major universities send students abroad and accept students from overseas through this internship program. This program seeks to develop engineers with broad global perspectives by giving students opportunities to obtain technical training at corporations or universities in about 80 countries worldwide and to learn, work, and live abroad for periods ranging from 8 to 52 weeks. Living expenses are borne by the host organizations as a rule. Nearly 300,000 students have been exchanged among countries so far. Three to four students from Tokyo Tech participate in this program every year.
