The 5th Tokyo Tech Research Showcase

The 2023 Tokyo Tech Research Showcase was held on March 22 as a hybrid event with the theme " Medical Devices ". The venue, Samyan Mitrtown Hall, is located on the upper floor of a large shopping center, providing an open and spacious atmosphere, and close to Chulalongkorn University.

Although still several years behind Japan, Thailand’s aging population is becoming a big problem, and thus there is a high level of interest in medical devices. With the upcoming integration of Tokyo Tech and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, this topic seemed to be a timely theme.
Three speakers from Tokyo Tech, in elemental and basic technology fields participated and interacted with local researchers.

There were about 50 participants at the venue, mainly from local universities, industries, research institutes, etc., and about 70 people, mainly from remote locations, participated online, and Q&A sessions were very active. Even from survey results, many voices expressed that the event proved meaningful. By holding the event on-site, speakers had the opportunity to talk directly with the participants, giving rise to the possibility of further development in the future. However, as there were some reports that the online participants found it difficult to hear, there will be a focus on improvement of the audio for future events.

At the event, following the opening remarks by Prof. Nobuhiro Hayashi, Vice President of Tokyo Tech, and Dr. Sarun Sumriddetchkajorn, Executive Vice President of NSTDA, the following four speakers introduced their latest research.

● Assoc. Prof. Akitoshi Okino, Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Tech
“Development of brand-new atmospheric low temperature plasmas and its application to materials and medical fields”
● Assoc. Prof. Marie Tabaru, Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Tech
“Elasticity measurement of fruits and muscles for agricultural and medical applications”
● Dr. Kriskrai Sitthiseripratip, Principal Researcher, Assistive Technology and Medical Devices Research Center, NSTDA
“Development of 3D Printing Technologies in Thailand and its applications in patient-specific implant design and manufacturing”
● Prof. Yoshitaka Kitamoto, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Tokyo Tech
“Biomedical Applications of Magnetic Nanoparticles”

Online Mini Workshop on Automotive and Advanced Transportation Engineering

A mini workshop was held on July 12 by Tokyo Tech ANNEX Bangkok in collaboration with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand.

The workshop focused on Automotive and Advanced Transportation Engineering (A2TE), one of TAIST-Tokyo Tech’s (hereafter “TAIST”) three education programs. The event was intended both to strengthen interexchange among researchers involved as TAIST faculty members and to open up possibilities for joint research with companies. Two researchers from Tokyo Tech ― School of Engineering, Associate Professor Masaki Yamakita and Masayuki Tanaka ― and three researchers from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) and NSTDA served as presenters. Assoc. Professor Preacher Karin of KMITL acted as a moderator. Approximately 110 people participated and there were many questions from audience regarding diesel engine exhaust gas, autonomous vehicle, etc. Advanced technologies related to automobiles seem to be fields of great interest in Thailand, and it seems that discussions have been particularly focused on technologies that are close to practical use.
We will continue to plan mini workshops on the TAIST program.
