The 6th Tokyo Tech Research Showcase
On January 19, the Tokyo Tech Research Showcase was held as a hybrid event at Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok. There were about 40 participants at the venue and about 60 participants online. Although the number of attendees was a little low compared to the number of people who registered, we believe that the attendees and the speakers were able to interact with each other closely. The theme of this year was"Various Modalities in AI for Industry ," and we believe it attracted a lot of attention from the industry and other sectors. AI-related technologies, represented by generative AI, are rapidly changing our lives, and how to effectively utilize AI has become an urgent issue for society. Especially in an aging society with a declining birthrate, effective use of AI is extremely important for maintaining industry, and it is a theme that should be addressed by industry, government, and academia.
Also, a survey conducted after the event showed that the audience generally responded favorably to the keynote address. Furthermore, we have received questions and interest in the speakers, and ANNEX will continue to support them in building new relationships.
At the event, following the opening remarks by Prof. Nobuhiro Hayashi, Vice President of Tokyo Tech, and Dr. Patchralita Chatwalitpong, Vice President of NSTDA, the following four speakers introduced their latest research.
● Assoc. Prof. Takahiro Shinozaki, School of Engineering, Tokyo Tech
“Spoken language acquisition by autonomous agents with intrinsic motivation”
● Prof. Manabu Okumura, Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Tech
“Language Processing and Its Applications in the Age of Pre-trained Models”
● Dr. Prachya Boonkwan, Language and Semantic Technology Research Team, AINRG, NECTEC, NSTDA

Since 2007, Tokyo Tech has cooperated with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand and leading Thai universities in the establishment and administration of Thailand Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (TAIST)-Tokyo Tech, a jointly organized graduate education program that fosters highly skilled researchers, engineers, and R&D personnel to advance research and development.
The TAIST-Tokyo Tech Graduation Ceremony for the academic year of 2022 was held on August 23, 2023 at the NSTDA in Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani Province.
The ceremony recognized the 47 students who completed the program as part of their master's degree studies at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Kasetsart University (KU), and Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, Thammasat University (SIIT). Of these, fifteen students also completed an optional certificate course through the Rail Transportation (RT) Curriculum, offered in collaboration with Mahidol University (MU).
TAIST-Tokyo Tech graduates with faculty members
Tokyo Tech Executive Vice President Jun-ichi Imura joined NSTDA President Sukit Limpijumnong and representatives of the five Thai universities in delivering congratulatory speeches at the ceremony.
Each graduate received a certificate of program completion from Prof. Imura and a gift from Prof. Dr. Limpijumnong. Certificates of completion for the optional RT Curriculum were also awarded.
The total number of graduates of the program now stands at 580. Program alumni are highly sought after, not only by Japanese and Thai companies, but also by universities and research institutes in Thailand and neighboring countries. A number of graduates have advanced to doctoral programs at western and Japanese universities, including Tokyo Tech.

The 5th Tokyo Tech Research Showcase
The 2023 Tokyo Tech Research Showcase was held on March 22 as a hybrid event with the theme " Medical Devices ". The venue, Samyan Mitrtown Hall, is located on the upper floor of a large shopping center, providing an open and spacious atmosphere, and close to Chulalongkorn University.
Although still several years behind Japan, Thailand’s aging population is becoming a big problem, and thus there is a high level of interest in medical devices. With the upcoming integration of Tokyo Tech and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, this topic seemed to be a timely theme.
Three speakers from Tokyo Tech, in elemental and basic technology fields participated and interacted with local researchers.
There were about 50 participants at the venue, mainly from local universities, industries, research institutes, etc., and about 70 people, mainly from remote locations, participated online, and Q&A sessions were very active. Even from survey results, many voices expressed that the event proved meaningful. By holding the event on-site, speakers had the opportunity to talk directly with the participants, giving rise to the possibility of further development in the future. However, as there were some reports that the online participants found it difficult to hear, there will be a focus on improvement of the audio for future events.
At the event, following the opening remarks by Prof. Nobuhiro Hayashi, Vice President of Tokyo Tech, and Dr. Sarun Sumriddetchkajorn, Executive Vice President of NSTDA, the following four speakers introduced their latest research.
● Assoc. Prof. Akitoshi Okino, Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Tech
