Academic and Research Cooperation in Solar Cell Technology

On December 12, 2003, Tokyo Tech concluded an agreement on academic and research cooperation in solar cell technology with National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology, Thailand.

Under the agreement, the two institutions aimed to work together in the area of photovoltaic technology, beginning with research and development of high efficiency thin-film solar cells, solar cell manufacturing technology, and other new applications, such as building-integrated photovoltaics suited for a tropical climate. Tokyo Tech also agreed to support the initial phases of the Thai government’s development of a national testing facility focused on solar power generation. A study of standards for photovoltaic systems in Thailand, such as reliability testing methods, module testing conditions, and grid connection regulations, was also planned. Specific activities for cooperation included doctoral and post-doctoral programs, joint research and supervision of research students and researchers, research staff exchanges, and symposia and seminars.

NSTDA is the main government research institute for solar cell technology in Thailand. The agency had developed a hybrid solar cell and begun small scale production prior to the agreement with Tokyo Tech. The Thai government was also implementing a plan to build 300,000 solar-powered homes in 2004 and 2005. Among science and technology areas, the Thai government is placing a great deal of emphasis on photovoltaic technology.

Cooperation between Tokyo Tech and NSTDA was intended to help Thailand develop human resources for the solar cell industry, as well as low cost solar cells that meet international-level standards, thereby supporting the realization of new concepts, such as " solar town. "
