Basic information of the program

Name of the program: Winter School on Physics of the Cell
Location: University of Trento (Via Verdi, 638122 Trento, Italy)
Schedule: From 20 Jan. 2020 to 31 Jan. 2020

Purpose

I'm studying about systems that single molecule is bridged by a pair of metals. Sometimes I study about behavior of biomolecules in this system, but I often have difficulty in analyzing these by high-order structure.

To make analyzing easier, modeling and predicting structure solution is needed. Therefore, I attended to this course to learn method to model computationally by some algorithms and programs.

Activity

Normal program

All schedule on the program in the morning on weekdays, I took theoretical lecture on characteristics of the cell (mechanism of taking in and out of the material to tissues, effect of radiation to the cell, folding process of DNA strands and so on), mathematical model used in algorithms to calculate and model reproduce processes of biological phenomena virtually in the computer.

Almost all the program in the afternoon on weekdays, I took hands-on seminar using computer calculating and modeling software like "Visual Molecular Dynamics", "MATLAB" and programs run by terminal in Ubuntu computer, corresponding to morning's lecture.

Lectures and hands-on seminars were held in Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (Via Sommarive, 9, 38123, Povo)

Exception

20 Jan 2020: I had a sightseeing program. I went to Cattedrale di San Vigilio (Cathedral of San Vigilio, Piazza del Duomo, 38122) and walked around with tour guide. After that, I had a welcome buffet in Department of Sociology and Social Research. (Via Giuseppe Verdi, 26, 38122)

22 Jan 2020: I went to MUSE-Museo di delle Scienze di Trento. (Museum of the Science in Trento, Corso del Lavoro e della Scienza, 3, 38122) In this museum, there are many living fishes, taxidermy of mammals, birds, lizards, natural objects (like big ice) and so on. We could touch almost of all of them to sense smoothness, hardness,coldness. Besides that, there are interactive exhibit like trampoline and balls to visualize potential of gravity force and revolution of celestial bodies, aquarium and screw to study how swirl is generated, spikes to cure stiff of shoulder and back and so on.

31 Jan 2020: All of this day's program were held in Department of Economics and Management. (Via Vigilio Inama, 5, 38122) In the morning, free talk session to express how we felt in this program, what to do in extra assignment, what would like to in the future and so on. In the afternoon, farewell buffet was held.

Extracurricular activity (individual activity, not included to the program)

26 Jan 2020: I went sightseeing to Verona (the town besides to Trento) and Venice.
31 Jan 2020: I walked around in Trento with other attendees of the program after the program ended. In the night, we had another farewell party.

Abilities gained in the progra

Classified roughly, I gained 3 abilities, leadership / cooperation, problem solving
skills, and understanding of multiculturism.

Leadership / Cooperation: I could talk to others and try to build trust relationships spontaneously without bias. (For example, the relationship Japan and South Korea has difficulty, but I talked Korean student actively to improve it from individual relationship) And, I tried to help other students who had difficulty in hands-on seminar.
Problem solving skills: In the first time of the program, I didn't do anything in the hands-on seminar because I was not accustomed to use Ubuntu and keyboard in Italy, so I didn't know basic operation of the computer. But, if I had something to ask, I didn't hesitate to ask to someone had knowledge. After that, if I had difficulty of running simulation program, I tried to search bugs or errors by knowledge gained in lecture of calculation physics.
Understanding ofmulticulturism: I could communicate each other in English on the lecture, but I didn't do it in other situations like cafeteria in the university, restaurants, shops. Therefore, I tried to speak Italy as much as can. And, I went to some places to know Italy's culture.

Plans in the future

In this program, I realized I must improve language skill. Even if in English, there were some situations that I couldn't communicated each other or do mistakenly by mistake of choosing words, phrases. And, in the university that accepts many exchange students, language skills in country I go is essential. In this program I had difficulty in cafeteria to order meals, and so on because I couldn't speak Italy.

Therefore, I must improve language skills of other than English. To do so, I'm going to study grammar, words, phrases and so on and go to Italy or countries whose native language isn't English once a year to practice and improve skills.

Other

Things I felt in the program

I worried whether I could finish the course and live safely because this was first time to go abroad, and sometimes I had troubles, (for example, I was wrapped bracelet around my arm and forced to pay 150 euros, lingered by unknown people) but I could finish and return to Japan safely.
