Overview

* This program is open to students who intend to conduct research (taking courses is optional, but only taking courses is unacceptable).
* If your focus is on research, please contact the one faculty member whom you truly would like to be as your academic supervisor and please do not contact more than one at the same time.

Undergraduate (2nd-year or above) and graduate-level students from partner universities have the opportunity to study abroad at Tokyo Tech for a period of up to one year as International Exchange Students (Other Participants) on a fee-paying basis.

Students enrolling as International Exchange Student (Other Participants) will be affiliated with the laboratory of a Tokyo Tech faculty member, who serves as their academic supervisor. Various options for study and research at the Institute are available: International Exchange Students (Other Participants) may take courses and receive an Academic Record; they may conduct research under the guidance of their academic supervisor, or they may engage in both research and coursework.

(Undergraduate students who are in the final year of a bachelor's degree program or possess this academic equivalency may enroll in graduate courses offered in English. Most courses at Tokyo Tech have prerequisites for enrollment.)

Language Requirements

The applicant must be a fluent speaker of English or Japanese. Proficiency in English is required.
Submission of an official test score report from TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, or an equivalent document (PDF) is strongly recommended.

Application Procedures

Once you have decided to apply

Step 1. Contact the Student Exchange Officer (or equivalent) at your home university

If your home university has a tuition-waiver agreement with Tokyo Tech, please refer to the webpage for programs (ACAP, YSEP) open to students under a tuition-waiver.

Step 2. Contact and identify a Tokyo Tech faculty member who is willing to serve as your academic supervisor.

Look for an academic supervisor whose field is the same as or close to your major field of study.

Before beginning the online application process, you must find a Tokyo Tech faculty member who is willing to host you at Tokyo Tech. Be sure to obtain confirmation that he or she agrees to serve as your academic supervisor. You will be required to provide the name of this faculty member when filling out the application. Only professors, associate professors and lecturers are eligible to serve as academic supervisors.

In the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering, a Tokyo Tech faculty member will review each applicant's CV and portfolio. The acceptance of new students into a laboratory is dependent upon the available space in each laboratory. Before applying, please be sure to submit your CV and portfolio to your prospective host faculty member by email.
In the Department of Technology and Innovation Management, an academic supervisor will be assigned to each applicant after a review of the applicant's CV and Study/Research Plan (free format). The acceptance of new students into a laboratory is dependent upon the available space in each laboratory. Step 3. Pay the stipulated application fee by credit card.

After completing the payment, please print out and scan, or directly make a PDF copy of, the "Result" (payment verification) webpage/screen and submit this PDF.
Tokyo Tech CANNOT ACCEPT any payments made in CASH or by CHECK.
The application fee is nonrefundable.

Step 4. Submit the required application materials online.

Prior to starting an application, contact the International Student Exchange Division request a log-in ID and password.

Three months to one month before enrollment

Step 5. The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will be sent to you from the International Student Exchange Division of Tokyo Tech.

Visa application processing time is expedited when you submit a COE with your visa application.

Two months to one month before enrollment

Step 6. Apply for your visa on your own with the COE which you have received.

Information about Tokyo Tech dormitories will be sent from the Student Support Division of Tokyo Tech.

Since dormitory room availability is limited, we recommend that International Exchange Students (Other Participants) prepare an alternative housing plan in case they are not assigned to a dormitory.

One month to two weeks before enrollment

Step 7. Information about an orientation will be sent from the International Student Exchange Division.

Enrollment Fee Payment Deadline:
The end of the month in which you enroll at Tokyo Tech
Tuition Payment Deadline:
- Spring Semester: May 31
- Fall Semester: November 30
For students who enroll in the middle of the semester:
- First semester: Tuition is due at the end of the month in which you enroll at Tokyo Tech.
- Second semester: Tuition is due by the deadline for the relevant semester (see above).

The required application materials (listed below) must be submitted to the International Student Exchange Division, Tokyo Tech by the designated Application Deadline. In addition, an acceptance letter (†) must be submitted by the faculty member who has consented to serve as your academic supervisor at Tokyo Tech.

1. Tokyo Institute of Technology Application Form
To be completed online. Please contact the International Student Exchange Division in advance to obtain a log-in ID and password.

2. Official Transcript in English
● Include the guidelines of the grading system in English.
● Submit transcripts from at least the last two years.
● Tokyo Tech reserves the right to verify the authenticity of your transcript.

3. Recommendation Letter from your Academic Supervisor (*) at your Home University (Free format)
● Associate Professor or equivalent and above.
● Unfortunately, we cannot regard language teachers as academic supervisors.

4. Verification of Student Status at your Home University
● This document, issued by your home university, must verify that you will maintain student status at your home university during your exchange period at Tokyo Tech.
● If your university's verification does not certify your enrollment period at your home university while at Tokyo Tech, please use our format for your verification. The period of your enrollment on the submitted verification needs to be exceed the period of enrollment at Tokyo Tech.

6. Copy of your Passport (PDF) (page(s) that verifies your name, nationality and photo)
● If you do not have a passport at the time of application, submit a copy of the relevant pages to the International Student Exchange Division by email as soon as it is issued.

7. Official Test score report from TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, or equivalent document
● The submission of official test scores is strongly recommended.
● Native speakers of English need not submit test scores.

8. Photograph
● The file must be less than 2MB, 350 (height) × 290 (width) pixels, JPEG format with a resolution of more than 300 dpi.
● The photo should be in color with no background and must provide a clear, frontal view of your entire face.
● The same photo as in your passport will not be accepted. Please prepare a new one.

9. Copy of the "Result" (payment verification) page from the online payment website for the application fee.

10. Consent of a Tokyo Tech Faculty Member
● Please submit evidence that a Tokyo Tech faculty member has consented to be your academic supervisor.
● A PDF version of email correspondence with the faculty member is sufficient to fulfill this requirement.

In addition to documents 1.– 10. above, which must be submitted online, originals of the following document(s) may be required by the International Student Exchange Division at Tokyo Tech. In this case, division staff will instruct the applicant to send the originals by postal mail.

11. Verification of your Financial Status (Original documentation written in English)
● Verification documents may include a scholarship certificate (if any) or a bank statement that verifies the currency unit and exact available balance in your or your financial supporter’s bank account; the total amount should exceed the equivalent of JPY 80,000 multiplied by the number of months you will stay in Japan (e.g., JPY 480,000 if staying for 6 months).
● Verification of financial status is required as part of the application process for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), a document necessary to obtain a visa to study in Japan.
● The verification documents should not be submitted as early as some of the other application documents because if they are received too far in advance of your enrollment date, they will be deemed invalid for being "too old". The application process for the COE begins about three months prior to your enrollment date, so please submit the most recent version of these documents around this time and not much earlier.
● If the original documentation is not issued in English, please attach a certified English translation of each with a signature of the translator and the date of translation.

Additional required documents before enrollment:

Health Certificate for Infectious Diseases

International students whose registered enrollment period will be three months or longer are required to have the health certificate completed and signed by a physician within the three-month period before the designated date of enrollment at Tokyo Tech (or within the three-month period before their planned date of arrival in Japan if their arrival will be later than the date of entrance). In addition, we request that it be submitted prior to the designated date of entrance (or prior to arriving in Japan if the arrival will be later than the date of entrance).
Note that all expenses for this shall be borne by students.
Please cooperate with our preventive measures against various infectious diseases that could cross international borders in order to protect the health and wellbeing of you and your colleagues.

Accommodation

Generally, International Exchange Students (Other Participants) receive low priority for student housing, but such applicants will be placed on the housing waiting list through the International Student Exchange Division. Applicants will be notified of the result around 4 to 6 weeks before their Tokyo Tech start date. However, as room availability is limited, the applicants are advised to prepare a possible alternate housing plan.

International Exchange Students (Other Participants) are not eligible for Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)Scholarships. No other scholarships are available.
