Ookayama Library reopened in January 2015 after renovations to create spaces for group study and discussion.
The 2nd and 3rd floors of the library are now an important part of Tokyo Tech's active learning concept.
Scheduled to be implemented at Tokyo Tech in April 2016, this innovative educational concept calls for an increase in classes designed to encourage students to move and think in more active ways through group work and presentations.The recent renovations are an integral part of active learning, and the new spaces on the 2nd and 3rd floors have been created exclusively for Tokyo Tech students and staff.

Student IDs are required to pass through the gate leading to the 2nd and 3rd floors.
The new study space on the 2nd floor
Unlike quiet self-study areas, this new space on the 2nd floor is specifically designed for group work and discussions. The unpartitioned floor plan creates an open space that allows a wide range of uses.
Pentagonal desks can be combined freely, and students are welcome to bring drinks.
The colorful new chairs feature slots under the seat for books and bags.
The whiteboard walls are great for brainstorming. There is also a sofa in the center of the 2nd floor where staff will be stationed to help you get the most out of the library.
The 3rd floor features four rooms separated by glass partitions. Group Study Rooms are available for meetings and presentation practice, and computers are also available for students.

The new library was introduced to the public on January 8, 2015 in a presentation given by two special guests, Professor Akira Ikegami from the Center for Liberal Arts and Institute Library Director Professor Eiichi Takahashi from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Science and Engineering.

This introduction to the new library system featured a discussion on the library's role as a place for innovative learning. The event attracted about 120 faculty members and students, many of whom asked questions and made requests during the discussion.
The library's functions and services will continue to be enhanced through proposals from students and faculty to provide the highest level of support for learning.
