Congratulations and a warm welcome to all incoming Tokyo Tech students!
Spring 2020 sees 3,041 newcomers joining the Tokyo Tech student body, with 1,147 students entering bachelor's degree programs, 1,598 students starting master's degree programs, 33 students entering professional master's degree programs, and 263 students beginning their doctoral degree programs. Together, these new students represent 32 countries and regions.
Due to concerns regarding the novel coronavirus, the Institute was forced to cancel entrance ceremonies scheduled for April 2, 2020. Despite this setback, Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu, currently enrolled students, and the Institute’s alumni send out these messages to welcome new students and wish them luck as they embark on their unique Tokyo Tech journey.

When I joined Tokyo Tech, I was the only one from my high school to enroll. I did not go to a cram school, which is fairly common in Japan, or use social network services actively. I still remember that I felt alone and insecure.
However, I met many students at welcome events, and this made me feel more comfortable. Chor Kleines, Tokyo Tech's chorus group, is an especially fun student group with more than 150 members. Take the chance to explore the many extracurricular clubs at Tokyo Tech to meet new friends and make your time here even more rewarding!
We are twin sisters from China, and we entered Tokyo Tech two years ago. With both anxiety and expectations regarding our new university life, we decided to make changes in our lives. Now, we are dedicating our time to study and extracurricular activities.
Although sometimes it can be difficult to understand fully some of the lesson contents, Tokyo Tech professors are very kind and they are happy to answer our questions, which is very helpful. Apart from our studies, we joined the Tokyo Tech International Students Association (TISA) and the Student Association for Global Exchange (SAGE), where we work on executing international exchange events. Tokyo Tech gives us opportunities to meet people whom we would not have otherwise met. We are inspired and influenced in a good way by the amazing people around us.
So, try your best to better yourself! We believe you can grow astonishingly in a short time at Tokyo Tech.

Despite the cancellation of the entrance ceremony, there will be a wide range of events for you at the beginning of your first year. These events will give you the chance to meet and get to know your classmates, and you will be able to learn about the many clubs and circles that Tokyo Tech has to offer. I am sure you will find one that interests you. There is no need to worry about classes or finding a club to join because there are older students and school staff that are happy to answer any questions you may have. I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
Welcome to Tokyo Tech! It's been 5 years since I first came here as a bachelor-level student. Tokyo Tech has been a wonderful environment where I'm constantly surrounded by incredibly talented and hard-working students. It was unnerving at first but encouraged me to study harder. One of the main reasons I continued to a master's degree here is because of the very research-friendly lab, where the professor and all other lab mates have been really supportive and constructive regarding my research. I hope you will have a wonderful experience studying here.
Congratulations to all incoming Tokyo Tech students! Since my childhood, I have been interested in mushrooms and other fungi, and I liked going to the mountains on holidays to take photos of them. I entered what was then Tokyo Tech’s School of Bioscience and Biotechnology to follow this interest.
The laboratory I belong to is on Suzukakedai Campus, which is close to where I live. The facility and campus are both spacious, and this allows me to devote myself to my research. In the future, I see myself building a career in bioscience research. I hope all of you pursue your interests and enjoy a fulfilling university life.
I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to you all for your admission to Tokyo Institute of Technology.
For me, Tokyo Institute of Technology was a place not only of study and research, but also a valuable space for connecting with other people and gaining a wide variety of knowledge. In particular, I feel that even now, the knowledge and experience that were passed on to me in the laboratory have been an important source of strength when making some difficult decisions.
Currently, while our lives are being enriched by technology in so many ways, the issues our society faces, such as the pollution of the environment or our aging population and falling birthrate, are becoming more complex. Technology is also indispensable to the resolution of these problems. You all have great potential to create new technology, and guide the world in a better direction.
Tokyo Institute of Technology is Japan's leading technology university. I hope that you will use the many opportunities for learning offered by your professors, who have wide-ranging insights to share, and increase your own capabilities and your own value. Moreover, new connections are being forged organically right now across the boundaries between different organizations and places, including between different universities, between companies and universities, and between Japan and the rest of the world. I hope that you will use Tokyo Institute of Technology as a base as you expand your network to the outside world as well, and take on many new challenges.
The stage for your future activities and triumphs is the world. I would like you to keep your focus on the world at large, and think about issues from a global perspective from the beginning.
I am very much looking forward to working with you all in the future to create technology that can contribute to the world.

The entrance ceremony was, sadly, cancelled due to COVID-19. It is quite a disappointment for everyone. The Tokyo Tech Alumni Association, Kuramae Kogyokai, had planned a welcome party and was looking forward to seeing all of you. Unfortunately, however, the spread of COVID-19 left us with no choice but to postpone the event.
You will be meeting many people through classes and extracurricular clubs. I am sure you’ll enjoy interacting with them and developing friendships that will last a lifetime. Looking back on my time at Tokyo Tech, spending time with the students I came to know as a member of the Rowing Club helped me very much after I started working.
With the remarkable progress of telecommunication technology and IT, our lives are changing drastically. In such a society, young people not only need to pursue research in their chosen fields and acquire advanced academic knowledge, but they also need to develop a strong, flexible attitude that allows them to respond effectively to changing times. I encourage you to pursue your interests wherever they lead you and enjoy your school life. The Tokyo Tech Alumni Association is here to help you make your time here even more fulfilling.

While everyone has taken different paths to get here, all of you are now standing at the same starting line. I invite you to absorb the knowledge and wisdom that Tokyo Tech offers as Japan's top science and engineering university.
A year ago, I joined Meister, the student club that creates and flies human-powered aircraft, because I want to do something unique to Tokyo Tech. At the time, I really could not see myself studying materials engineering and constantly working with titanium and aluminum, as I do now.
I feel strongly that Tokyo Tech has the environment and support systems that help you to realize your dreams.
