After last year's successful inaugural program, Tokyo Tech's TIER Summer Program 2013 is hosting a total of 29 participants: 19 TiROP and 10 TKT CAMPUS Asia students. The TiROP students come from the United States, Europe, Singapore and Hong Kong. The CAMPUS Asia students come from Tsinghua University in China and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea.
TIER Summer Program participants have the opportunity to conduct short-time research in their area of expertise in a lab under the supervision of a Tokyo Tech professor in accordance with their Study and Research Plans. Additionally, participants may take Summer School courses taught in English, such as High Tech Japan, Advanced Technology in Emerging Fields, Modern Japan, and/or the Science and Engineering Communication Project. Participants also attend Survival Japanese classes to learn basic Japanese.
The TIER Summer Program offers various events which include visits to cutting-edge tech companies, special lectures and the Cross Cultural Tokyo Bus Tour in order for participants to enrich their understanding of Japanese technology and culture. The TIER Summer Program 2013 Closing Ceremony is scheduled for August 23. Research presentations given by the participants will be held on the same day.

In 2011 Tokyo Tech was awarded a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) grant in the Re-Inventing Japan Project to establish and run two programs, the TKT CAMPUS Asia Consortium and the World-Class University Alliance for Educating Techno-Scientific Leaders. From April 2012, under the name of TIER, these two programs began accepting international students and dispatching Tokyo Tech students abroad with the aim of cultivating global techno-scientific leaders.
The TKT CAMPUS Asia Consortium is a research-oriented joint educational program with Tsinghua University in China and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea. In addition to the Summer Program for inbound students, Tokyo Tech hosts a Joint Educational Program where students from Tsinghua and KAIST can conduct short-term research and have their credits transfer. Outgoing Tokyo Tech students have the opportunity to study at Tsinghua University for either a semester of courses and research (up to one year in total) or to conduct research for a minimum of three months. Outgoing students to KAIST can participate in a one-month summer program, a fall or spring semester program or conduct research during the winter break.

Through partnerships with 16 leading science and technology universities in Asia, Europe and the US, the World-Class University Alliance for Educating Techno-Scientific Leaders aims to provide an avenue for students to become future global leaders and form new international networks for collaboration. The World-Class University Alliance for Educating Techno-Scientific Leaders' core programs are the Tokyo Tech International Research Opportunities Program (TiROP) and the Joint Educational Program.
TiROP provides talented undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to conduct short-term research projects under the supervision of a host professor and take courses for up to one year.
Tokyo Tech students have the opportunity to do research-oriented study abroad for up to one year at partner universities.
