TASTE 海外短期語学学習（英語）夏派遣 2023年8月11日～9月8日

I took the program named “English for Science and Technology (EST)” at the university of California, Davis (UCD). UCD is located in the city of Davis, which is calm and not so large downtown. Since the area of UCD is vast, most students rent a bicycle.
EST is the four-week program for science students. (There was one law student in my class.) We can learn some latest science topics, social issues, the tips to start a business, and English listening and pronunciation skills. There were 19 students in my class, and 4 EST classes. We were classified by a simple test using Google Forms about one month before the program had started. The test has 50 questions, consisted of 20 short listening, 10 grammar, 10 vocabulary, and 10 reading questions. The participants were almost undergraduate students, but there were some graduate students and working adults. Almost all of them were Japanese, the rest were Chinese and Taiwanese. The classes were held in the International Center from 9am to 1pm. Each class was 50 minutes. On Fridays, we were supposed to visit some UCD labs and technology companies, but we weren’t do so due to the COVID. On three Fridays except the graduation ceremony on the last Friday, we listened to two lectures and visited to San Francisco by bus, respectively.

A) Hot Topics in Science and Technology
We learned about AI, ML (machine learning), energy, and biotechnology. The teacher was a Ph.D. student majoring in biotechnology, so the classes of it were too specific to understand. Overall, the contents were narrow and deep, rather than broad and shallow. After the AI/ML classes, we worked in teams of three to research one AI/ML-based technology, and listed what would be needed to make it work.
B) Intercultural Research Project
During the first week, we learned about some social issues. As the final project, we individually made a five-minute presentation and a poster. We decided on one topic, listed 10 questions, and conducted interviews to more than 5 American people. I asked to some UCD students and some people in Davis city. This class was comparably tough, but every presentation was very interesting.
C) Introduction to Entrepreneurship in the U.S.
We learned what were needed for starting a business and how to find a business idea from a teacher who had made a cookie shop. For the final project, the students worked in groups of five to give a 7-minute presentation on their business idea. We decided on some points in detail such as what kinds of products were needed, who the target was, how much it would cost to make one product/service, and so on.
D) Listening and Pronunciation in Science and Technology
We learned the English pronunciation characteristics such as the difference of “r” and “l”, linking, reduction, intonation, and so on. Once a week, two UCD students came to our class, so we separated in two groups and had the opportunity to talk with them. We had many chances to speak English with having a lot of fun in this class.

There were two weekend bus trips, to Yosemite National Park for 2 days and to Los Angeles for 3 days. Many students applied to them after the orientation in the very first day. There seemed to be some students who chose to go with their host family or friends, didn’t apply to the trips. The cost was much cheaper when applied with multiple people, so I highly recommend making friends as soon as possible in the orientation.
In the Yosemite trip, there were three hiking options, and I chose the toughest one to climb to the top of a waterfall. There are some points you should be careful. It takes about 5 hours to come back to the starting point. The trail is steep and the air is dry, so no wonder some people get heatstroke or dehydrated. In practice, I heard that 3 students got dehydrated on the way back. If you want to choose this option, you should bring water as much as possible. If you can reach the summit, you can see a beautiful view and thrilling cliffs.
In the LA trip, we could visit many famous places, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, California Disney. There are also some points you should remember. It takes about 8 hours from UCD to LA, so you will waste almost 1 day totally. Besides, you have to pay extra $159 to go to the Disney Park or the Adventure Park. Two friends of mine and I decided not to go there and to go to Venice & Santa Monica beach. We could enjoy seeing some shops and swimming in the ocean, but almost all students went to Disney Park or Adventure Park and had a lot of fun until the closing time. It costs much money, but I think it is worth paying.

I realized that English skill would only improve when I had a conversation with native speakers. As I mentioned in the first section, almost all participants of the program were Japanese. I have read the experiences on the Titech website before the program, and decided to try speaking English even with Japanese students. From the beginning of the program, there were so many Japanese students speaking Japanese. I took care to speak English with my friends, but this effort only lasted for the first week. The conversation gradually turned to Japanese except classes. Since it was supposed to be the highest-level class, it was a pity. I regret not speaking English whole days in this program. Also, we could understand what we wanted to say even our expressions were not good. On the other hand, native speakers sometimes couldn’t understand what we wanted to say. To improve our English skills, I realized that we have to talk with native speakers and continue doing so for a long time. Studying abroad surrounded by Japanese people for only one month was not enough to improve my English. However, there were some chances to have a conversation with native speakers, students I encountered in the recreation building ARC, and people I interviewed in the Intercultural Research Project class, etc. In Japan, we hardly ever talk with native speakers in English, so it was very fun to have conversations and express what I wanted to say in English. I felt very motivated and confident in this program. I found that we had to take action and talk actively when learning something, not just English. I’m going to be a working adult in half a year, so I’d like to be proactive and learn everything I can. Moreover, I’d like to take an English conversation lecture in near future because there are seldom such chances in Japan.

どのプログラムを受講するかは、主に日程、申込期日、費用、何を学べるかについて、TASTEの募集要項を参考に決めました。また、プログラムの雰囲気や何に気を付けるべきかについて、体験記を読んで参考にしました。詳細な情報は、東工大の留学情報館の方に訊いたり、現地の大学の担当の方とメールでやり取りしたりしました。
基本的に申込みに関することは自力でやる必要があります。留学することを決めたらすぐに航空券を取りましょう、すぐに高くなります。デービスに行くまでの手段として、サクラメント空港からとサンフランシスコ空港からに大きく分かれます。サンフランシスコから来ていた参加者の多くは、大学経由の団体申込でしたが、バスで来ていたようでした。一方サクラメントから来た人の多くは、一人で公共交通機関を使うことを心配し、Uberを使用していました。私の場合は、Yolobusというバスを使用してUCDに向かいました。サクラメント空港とUCDを結ぶ路線は42Aという時計回りのルートと、42Bという反時計回りのルートがあります。42Bルートでは、途中に終点があるため一度降りる必要があり、運賃も２度払わなければなりませんが、トータル５ドルで行くことができます。もし時間に余裕があり、時間を節約したければ、42Aルートを用いれば2.5ドルで最も安く行くことができます。
このプログラムでは、ビザは必要ありませんが、アメリカに入国するのにESTAというものが必要です。発行するのに21ドルかかります。ESTAの申し込みの際、非公式サイトから申し込まないように注意してください。私の友人がそうしてしまい、80ドル払っていました。ただ、非公式サイトから申し込んだESTAも有効なもので、その友人も３週間ほど経ってから私たちとの会話の中で気づいていました。

クレジットカードの記録と現金の残高から計算したところ、食費やお土産代などのすべての出費を含め、およそ136万円かかりました。これは、ひとえに１ドル約150円のひどい円安の影響です。これ以上高くなることはないと思うので安心してください。また、ホームステイを選んでいれば、寮代の半額で済んでいたみたいです。

過去の体験記を見ると選択肢が無かった年もあったみたいですが、私は寮もホームステイも選ぶことができました。私は寮を選びました。3人部屋でしたが、1人で広々使っていました。
寮に住むにあたって、気を付けるべきことが2点あります。まず、私の部屋に大量のアリがいました。すべての部屋に発生していたわけではないと思いますが、部屋の外にあるシャワールームやトイレにもいました。日本のアリと比べて小さく、私はそれほど気にしていませんでしたが、3回噛まれてしまいました。気になる人は、スタッフに申し付けて、部屋を変えてもらうといいと思います。2点目は、修了式の日の正午までにチェックアウトしなければならないことです。修了式は午前中にあったため(朝余裕がなかったため)、式の後にチェックアウトしました。その翌日に帰国する予定だったため、ホテルを予約する必要がありました。式の後、クラスの全員でBBQをし、デービスをぶらぶらしていましたが、その間私一人だけ大量の荷物とともに移動していました。
寮には2つのプランがあります。ベッドシーツや枕、タオルなどのリネンと、1日3食付きで1日あたり105ドルのプランと、リネン無し、朝食無しの1日2食付きで1日あたり79ドルのプランです。安い方のプランを私は選んだので、日本から2枚シーツを持っていきました。枕は2枚のタオルを重ねて代用しました。
先ほど書いたように、シャワーとトイレは部屋の外にありました。毎朝掃除に来てくれるので、基本いつでも清潔です。ただ、シャンプーなどはないので、日本から持ってくるようにしましょう。
また、洗濯機もあります。もちろん洗剤は付いていないので、こちらも日本から持ってくるようにしましょう。服を干しておくスペースは無いので、乾燥機を使います。洗濯機も乾燥機も1.5ドルかかります。
ほとんどの参加者がホームステイを選んでいたので、友人から聞いたホームステイのメリットデメリットもまとめておこうと思います。最大の利点としては、やはりネイティブの方と会話できる点です。私の友人も英語で会話することやホストファミリーと外出することが楽しいと言っていました。また、運が良ければ同じ家に他国の留学生も来ていて、仲良くなることができます。一方で、心配なこととしては、ホストファミリーとの相性です。ある友人の家庭の子どもが、その友人をなめていたようで、持ち物を壊されたり、危険な行動を取られたりしたようでした。ただ、このようなトラブルはこの1件しか聞いていないので、心配する必要はないと思います。ホストファミリーを手配する方に相談すれば変更するなどの対応をしてもらえるみたいです。また、デービスは雨が少なく、水の使用を制限する家庭が多いようでした。シャワーは10分まで、洗濯は5日に一度という家庭があるようでした。
総合的に判断して、私はホームステイをおすすめします。1か月しか期間はありません。ホストファミリーからたくさんのことを学べるはずです。

A) SIMカードについて
使用可能エリアや私のスマホとの互換性を確認したうえで、SIMカードを購入したのですが、最初の2週間ほどインターネットに繋ぐことができませんでした。そのため、空港からUCDまで事前に調べていた情報を頼りに行くしかありませんでした。税関検査等でネットが繋がらず慌てないために、航空券やESTA、入学許可証などを紙で印刷して持っておくようにすることをおすすめします。また、寮やホストファミリーの家にたどり着くためのルートもしっかり調べておくと安心です。私が使っていたSIMカードについて、LINEでのサポートが付いていたので問い合わせましたが、解決しませんでした。ところが、2週間ほど経ったある日、突然電波の棒が立っていました。繋がったのでとりあえず安心しましたが、繋がるなら最初からつながってくれよと思いました。出国前によく調べておくといいと思います。また、ポケットWi-Fiはほとんど確実に繋がります。アメリカは所々電波が弱く、特にヨセミテ国立公園ではほとんど繋がらず、バスのWi-Fiも使い物になりませんでした。ポケットWi-Fiを持ってきた人が電波で困っているのを見たことがありませんでした。ただ、SIMカードに比べて非常に高額なので、余程のスマホ依存症でない限りSIMカードで事足りると思います。
B) クレジットカードについて
クレジットカードは複数枚持っていくか、限度額を上げておくといいと思います。アメリカはキャッシュレス決済が非常に普及していて、現金を使えないお店もあります。また、ヨセミテ国立公園、ロサンゼルスのバスツアーは、多くの人が初日のオリエンテーションの後に申し込み、両方申し込み、ディズニーのプランも付ければ最大で総額20万円近くまで達してしまうので、上記のようにすることをおすすめします。
C) コロナについて
風やコロナにかからないように気を付けましょう。オリエンテーション後、初週にコロナに感染した学生がクラス内に数人出て、クラス外の他の学生も感染していました。彼らは30日間のうち約5日間を無駄にしてしまい、とても悲しそうでした。行きの航空機内で特に気を付けるといいと思います。
D) 夜遅くの移動について
夜遅くに遠くの場所から帰るときには、帰りの手段をしっかり確保するようにしましょう。その日は、友人とオークランドで野球観戦をしていました。私自身は野球に詳しくないのですが、あの大谷翔平選手を生で観られるとのことで、目に焼き付けに行きました。ちょうど数日前に右ひじを痛めてしまったため、投手としては観ることはできませんでしたが、打者として観ることができました。アスレチックス相手に2-9で負けてしまいましたが、大谷選手を観ることができて全員が興奮していました。試合は午後9時に終わりました。すぐにUberの車を捕まえられるだろうと楽観視していたのですが、およそ1時間も捕まえられず焦りが募っていきました。オークランドからUCDまで100km以上離れており、時間も遅く、なかなかドライバーがマッチしませんでした。あらゆる手を尽くし、ついにLyftでドライバーを見つけられ、帰ることができました。もしアメリカで遅い時間に遠くの場所から帰る予定があれば、UberかLyftで事前に予約しておくようにしましょう。

この体験記を読んでくださっている方の中に、留学に行こうか迷っている修士2年の方がいらっしゃるかもしれません。まずは当然ですが、指導教員に確認しましょう。本当に留学に行きたくて、教員からも許可が出れば、迷わず留学に行ってください。ハリウッドの雰囲気、ヨセミテの美しい景色、UCDの外国人の友人、すべてが貴重な思い出になります。また、授業は大変なものもありますが、身になるものばかりです。親切な人が多く、英語が苦手な人、留学初心者の人でも楽しく過ごすことができます。研究については、留学前後でできる限り頑張りましょう。私としては、就職活動で忙しい修士1年よりも、2年で行ってよかったと思っています。必ずかけがえのない経験をすることができます。これまで海外に行ったことのない方、留学したことのない方、ぜひ一度行ってみてください。
